Turmeric is grown in tropical Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. This herb provides a tropical rhizomatous stem with large leaves and beautiful yellow flowers appear on the ground. Turmeric powder is extracted from its rhizome. It has a peppery flavour and bitter, and is recognised primarily by its bright yellow colour (as for yellow curry and mustard). It can be used as a fabric dye. We also know that turmeric has been used for many years in traditional Indian medicine to treat a variety of ailments including gastrointestinal problems, infections and inflammations.

Family: Zingiberaceae (same family as ginger)
