Botanical name: Daucus carota



Family: Apiaceae



Biennial plant that can reach 30 cm high, with a thick and elongated taproot, generally orange in color. The stem is hairy and striated. The alternate leaves are soft, the upper leaves finely cut, the lower leaves toothed divided into fragments. The white flowers are grouped in umbels. The seeds are flat and green.

Origin

It is believed that the plant was discovered 5000 years ago in what is now Afghanistan. Begins a long journey through the centuries that led him, according to the human exploration, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Europe where it is grown in the eighteenth century.



In North America, despite an appearance around 1620 the carrot does not take its place in human nutrition at the end of the First World War.
